Miles Davis, Per Lui, 1989

This is one of a series of iconic portraits Comte made of the great Jazz musician for Per Lui magazine in 1989. As with many of the other works, in this image, Comte chooses not to show Davis’s face, instead letting his power exude through his mere presence. Comte creates a sumptuous and painterly composition, playing off the deep red background against the plush textures of the embroidered jacket. Taken towards the end of the Jazz musician’s career and following a major comeback for the star in the 1980s, this is a fitting tribute to his life and work.
